Well a blog in the traditional sense is just a journal or a news letter. It use to be used by people who just wanted to post their today activities. I guest it gave them senses of helping others by expressing how they felt and dealt with their own issues.
A blog is different from a website in which it should be updated on a regular basis. If you have a website selling products they have static pages where the information rarely changes expect when they update their products list of have a sale.
Today a lot of product websites are converting to a blog plate form and providing articles on their site. This is mainly because the search engines prefer information rather than just products. I assume it is better for the consumer and helps them make a better informed decision.
A blog will also provide follow up with readers who have questions about your article post. A blog is meant to be more personal than editorial. A blog is used best for marketing when they person hosting the blog is speaking from a position as caring rather than a news reporter.
I would assume even a news reporter could get a following. As you can see a blog can be just about anything in today's the main thing is that you are providing useful information.
Here is an example of one of my free blogs I recently started "Lawn Care Problems" this took me about 30 minutes to do. It is a niche site on lawn care since one of my passions is curb appeal.
Blog can be shared by a group, locked for preferred individuals (membership sites), they can be used to show care art work or a high school year book.
Subjects on blogs can range from troubled teens to training your dog or getting the word our about a company product you like and your experience.
Blog templates can be fancy with a customized them such as the heading of a baby site showing a cute infant his pen to a bunch of puppies. Some people who are branding themselves had fancy head shots and backgrounds.
Bloggers like to present his information from his point of view of experience. When a person blog they own the blog and the information and some people have gained large follower groups and in return sold their blogs for millions of dollars.
More and more blogs go up everyday and there are millions of people reading blogs daily. Blog owners are becoming expert writers and authoritative figures in their industry.
